EXPO This Thursday

Last week I had students share something they had learned on video.  We are working to put everything into one complete Expo video.
EXPO This Thursday at 5:00 PM
Spring Expo is scheduled for this Thursday, March 22nd.  Our classroom presentation starts at 5:00 PM. Like with our Fall Expo expect traffic and difficult parking.  The students are excited to share what they have learned.  Unlike last time most students elected not to have live, whole-group, speaking parts, instead they recorded something they had learned for a video.  More information and the full expo schedule can be found here.

Steam Expo Attire
The goal for our STEAM Expo is to have all students dress up a bit and look nice.  Students are presenting the work they have done and we want them to feel the importance of the night.  Have your students dress up but don’t feel like you need to be too fancy; a nice pair of slacks, a collared shirt, blouse, or dress etc. are all good choices.

Report Cards
Report cards went home last Thursday.  They were in a 9 x 12 yellow envelope.  The envelope needs to be signed and returned to school.  You keep the report card.  Please do not throw out the envelope, send it back to me.  Also please sign one of the copies of the Personal Learning Plan and return that as well.

Curriculum Overview
Science -  We are preparing to share our learning at this Thursday's expo.  Students have been recording videos and on Tuesday we will have our first full practice.

Reading - We have been reading fiction books that show animals and their needs.  Ask your child about Little One by Jo Weaver the story of a bear cub and her mother.

Writing - We are writing about what we have learned about the needs of animals.

Math - Student's have been learning their doubles addition facts and seeing how those facts can relate to subtraction problems.  For instance if you know 5 + 5 = 10 then you also know that 10 - 5 = 5.

Word Study - We are focused on the vocabulary words necessary for our current PBL unit on living things: herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, domestic, wild, stem, roots, leaves, flowers, healthy, unhealthy, and more.

Vertical Garden / Animal Needs

Last week we moved our pea seedlings into the indoor vertical garden.
Kindness Campaign
We have begun a kindness campaign this week.  This morning all of the students in the school created name tags and tried to use the names of their peers in the classroom and throughout the school.  We also practiced saying hello and giving compliments.  Later in the week we will be reading kindness books including a special book read to us by Assistant Principal Brooke Stidham.  There will be an assembly on Wednesday and on Friday the whole school will wear green to show friendship.

EXPO Save The Date

Spring Expo is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, March 22nd.  Check out this flyer for more information.

Kindergarten Concert
Ms. Huckabone has a kindergarten evening concert scheduled for April 10th at 6 PM.  She sent home a paper about it last week.

Curriculum Overview
Science -  This week we continue our Project Based Unit on living things.  We have been working hard to understand what animals need to survive.  After studying our ants and reading about many different animals we have found that animals need water, food, and shelter to survive.  We are learning about how some animals are wild while other animals are domestic, or dependent on people.

Reading - We have been reading fiction books that also show animals and their needs.  This week we will also read a lot of books on kindness including Kindness is Cooler Ms. Ruler and The Quiltmaker's Gift.

Writing - This week will be writing about what we have learned about the needs of animals.

Math - This week we will continue learning about pictographs, bar graphs, line graphs, and tally charts.  We will also review some addition and subtraction including double's facts like 2 + 2 = 4 or 4 -2 = 2 and 6 + 6 = 12 or 12 - 6 = 6

Word Study - We are focused on the vocabulary words necessary for our current PBL unit on living things: herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, domestic, wild, stem, roots, leaves, flowers and more.

Ants!

Last week, as part of our study of living things, ants arrived in our classroom.  The students were excited to share them with you through Seesaw today.

EXPO Save The Date
Spring Expo is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, March 22nd.

Kindergarten Concert
Ms. Huckabone has a kindergarten evening concert scheduled for April 10th at 6 PM.  She sent home a flyer about it today.

Pennies for Pasta
Information went home today on how to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society.  I know we just got finished with the penny wars fundraiser, so do what you can.

Curriculum Overview
Science -  This week we continue our Project Based Unit on living things.  Our driving questions is "How can we grow our own healthy snacks?".  This week we will move our pea seedlings into the school's tower garden and study the structure and function of plants.  We will also learn about our new ants and determine what they need to survive.

Reading - Fiction books usually have story lines where a particular problem rises to a climax and then is resolved.  We are working on identifying and tracking those problems.  If you haven't already, ask your children about Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.

Writing - As we conduct an experiment trying to prove what plants need to survive, students will be writing about their observations of the different groups of plants.  We will also diagram the parts of a plant.

Math - This week we will begin learning about pictographs, bar graphs, line graphs, and tally charts.

Word Study - We are focused on the vocabulary words necessary for our current PBL unit on living things.
