Bike or Walk to School on Wednesday

Color Fun Run
The second annual color run fundraiser is scheduled for May 18th.  The color fun run is a mini-marathon for students where they can run laps to earn money for the school PTSO.  While they run, color cornstarch is thrown in the air marking their laps.  More information about how you can donate is coming.  If you would like to volunteer and help out with this event please sign up here.

Bike or Walk to School This Wednesday
This Wednesday is a Bike or Walk to school day.  An email went home last Monday, 4/23, with details.  A paper flier also went home.

Field Trip on Thursday, May 17th
As part of our study of the human body we are planning a kindergarten field trip to St. Joe's Health Exploration Station in Canton.  The trip is officially planned for Thursday, May 17th.  We will leave the school at 9:30 AM and return at 11:45 AM.  If you would like to join us as a chaperone please email me and make sure you have filled out the necessary background check paperwork and submitted it to the office (many of you already took care of this in the Fall).  A field trip permission slip went home in student's red folders today.  It is printed on bright golden paper.

Please bring in some crackers for our snacks.

Curriculum Overview
Science - We are currently in the middle of a Project Lead The Way unit on the structure and function of the human body.  This week we will work on understanding the skeletal structure of our hands.  We will be trying to understand why we have so many bones in our hands.

Math - This week we will primarily be working on reading analog and digital clocks.  Today we made a list of things that take about one second, one minute, and one hour.

Literacy - We are reading books about skeletons and bones to support the learning of our Project Lead The Way unit on the human body. 

Writing - Students are going to be doing some informational writing around one of the parts of the human body we have studied.  As a class we have been writing about the heart.  Students have been doing additional writing, unrelated to our human body work, during our guided reading centers. They have been creating books on a topic of their choice.

Word Study - This week students are working on different word sorts aligned with their academic next steps.  Students are working on letter sounds, blends, and spelling patterns. In addition to these sorts, as a class last week, we looked at contractions.

Field Trip Coming Up on Thursday, May 17th

A U of M doctor came in today to support our study of the human body.  She taught us how to listen to each other's hearts.
I hope you enjoyed the warm spring weekend.  I heard the Leslie Science center had a great Earth Day Festival.

Science - We are currently in the middle of a Project Lead The Way unit on the structure and function of the human body.  Today a doctor from U of M came to discuss the heart and lungs.  She taught about the heart and lungs and helped students hear the hearts of their peers and also spoke about some of the steps she took to become a doctor.  If you have a background in medicine and would like speak to our class about some aspect of the human body please email me and let me know.

Math - We will be studying fractions this week, primarily halves, quarters, thirds, and wholes. 

Literacy - We are reading books about the human body to support the learning of our Project Lead The Way unit on the human body.  We are also reading a book that has a Phoenix in it so we can learn more about our school mascot.  Ask your students about The Girl Who Drew a Phoenix.

Writing - Students are going to be doing some informational writing around one of the parts of the human body we have studied.

Word Study - This week students are working on different word sorts aligned with their academic next steps.  Students are working on letter sounds, blends, and spelling patterns. 

Today we started exploring equal parts and fractions.

Field Trip In The Works

Commuting to A2STEAM
A document went home today in your child's red folder that was titled "Commuting to A2STEAM."  The PTSO and administration are working hard to make drop off and pick up of students at school safe and predictable.  Please review the document as soon as you can.

Math - In class this week we will study place value.  We will also do a lesson where we look at the height, width, and surface area of our backpacks.

Literacy - We are reading books about the human body to support the learning of our Project Lead The Way unit on the human body.  We will also read a book that has a Phoenix in it so we can learn more about our school mascot.

Writing - Students are going to be doing some informational writing around one of the parts of the human body we have studied.

Word Study - This week students are working on different word sorts aligned with their academic next steps.  Students are working on letter sounds, blends, and spelling patterns.  The sort they completed last week went home today.

Mindful Movement

Students practiced moving throughout the classroom and school mindfully today.

Yearbook Orders Due Tomorrow
If you would like to order a yearbook you need to do it by tomorrow April 10th.  I sent an email with the ordering information last week.  You can fine a paper order form here.  You can also use this information to order online.

K Musical Performance Tomorrow Evening
Ms. Huckabone is hosting a kindergarten performance this Tuesday, April 10th, at 6PM. She would like the students to be on stage a few minutes before 6 PM.

Lost and Found
Lost and found is being packed up and donated to the PTSO store tomorrow.  Check through it this afternoon or evening if you can.

Math - In class this week we will work on addition problems with multiple addends (i.e. 1 + 1 + 4).  We will also study place value.

Literacy - We are reading books about the human body to support the learning of our Project Lead The Way unit on the human body.  We will also read a book that has a Phoenix in it so we can learn more about our school mascot.

Writing - Students are going to be doing some writing around the new Project Lead The Way unit on the human body.  Before that begins I will be teaching the students to stretch out their stories into multiple sections and pages.

Welcome Back

New Project Lead the Way Unit

This week we are beginning a new Project Lead The Way unit on the structure and function of the human body.  Students will learn about the shape and structure of our major organs along with the function and purpose of each.

Ms. Huckabone is hosting a kindergarten performance next Tuesday, April 10th, at 6PM. 

STEAM Expo
Thank you so much for coming to our STEAM Expo.  I really appreciate the effort you made to get here on time and your willingness to work around any traffic or parking issues.  The students were really excited to host you and show you their learning.  I posted many photos of the Expo night, and our classwork leading up to it, online in the Room K-3 Photo Gallery.

Homework
Thanks for getting those assignments back to me today.  A new packet will go out later this week.

Curriculum Overview
Science - We are beginning a Project Lead The Way unit on the structure and function of the human body!  Students will learn about the shape and structure of our major organs along with the function and purpose of each.  Students will begin assembling a miniature (and simplified) human body on paper at the end of this week.

Math - In class this week we will study fact families and further understand how addition and subtraction are related.  We will also look at simple functions (i.e. with a "+2" function if you put in the number 0 you get 2.  If you put in the number 3 you get 5)

Literacy - We are reading books about the human body to support the learning of our Project Lead The Way unit on the human body.  As part of our year long study of weather we will also read a realistic fiction book about a family facing Hurricane Katrina.

Writing - Students are going to be doing some writing around the new Project Lead The Way unit on the Human Body.  Before that begins I will be teaching the students to stretch out their stories into multiple sections and pages.

Word Study - This week students are working on different word sorts aligned with their academic next steps.  Students are working on letter sounds, blends, and complex spelling patterns.
